Safety Engineering

Implementation of the payload safety process begins with a detailed knowledge of pertinent payload safety requirements. The ISS and STS safety policies and requirements for STS and ISS payloads are specified in the current versions of NSTS 1700.7, Safety Policy and Requirements for Payloads Using the STS, and NSTS 1700.7 ISS Addendum, Safety Policy Requirements for Payloads using the ISS (ISS Addendum), respectively. Ground safety policies and requirements are specified in the current version of KHB 1700.7, Space Shuttle Payload Ground Safety Handbook. Other requirements documents that must be considered during the implementation of the payload safety process include, but are not limited to the current versions of:

  • NSTS/ISS 13830, Payload Safety Review and Data Submittal Requirements
  • NSTS/ISS 18798, Interpretation of NSTS/ISS Payload Safety RequirementsAQC logo
  • SSP 50021, Safety Requirements Document for the International Space Station
