ORION Vibro-Acoustic Test Capability at NASA Plum Brook Station Space Power Facility
9/17/2007
Contract Awarded September 2007 - Environmental tests will be used to demonstrate the ability of the Orion spacecraft to perform safely in simulated operating conditions such as launch, on-orbit and re-entry. Thermal, acoustic, mechanical vibration and electromagnetic qualification tests will be needed. The integrated launch abort system, crew module, service module and spacecraft adapter will be tested. To support this effort, ZIN is teamed with Benham Constructors LLC on a GRC-sponsored contract to design, build and commission a Vibro-Acoustic Test Capability at the NASA Plum Brook Space Power Facility. This large facility will support testing of the Orion crew exploration vehicle.
This new capability includes a Mechanical Vibration Facility (MVF) and a Reverberant Acoustic Test Facility (RATF). In support of the GRC-based contract, ZIN is responsible for the design, installation, test and commissioning of the High Speed Data Acquisition System (HSDAS). This system will collect, store, playback and analyze data from both the MVF and the RATF. ZIN will operate the data acquisition system during the MVF and RATF commissioning tests and provide integrated team engineering support including configuration management, product assurance, risk management. We will also perform several mechanical and structural engineering roles that include structural analysis of the MVF’s reaction mass, input into the MVF validation test article and providing a concept for mounting test articles in the RATF.
