Flight Safety Engineer

Lead Safety Engineer

Responsibilities:
For Space Flight hardware and software:
1) Perform System Safety Engineering hazard assessments and analyses in order to:
i) Identify and quantify risk
ii) Assure compliance with NASA/Commercial safety requirements
iii) Provide detailed reports and recommendations for mitigation strategies
iv) Prepare and present technical presentations
v) Participate in Safety Panel Reviews
vi) Review flight drawings and documents, operational scenarios, and verification documents
2) Evaluate change orders for safety impact
i) Provide real-time and post-flight engineering support for flight anomaly investigations
ii) Work with customers (NASA, Commercial), International Partners, Principal Investigators, and other
iii) Payload Providers and Prime contractors
3) Represent system safety as a board member for Risk Review Meetings, hardware and software Change Control Boards, Design Review Boards, and Manufacturing and Hardware Delivery Readiness Review Boards.
4) Serve as lead system safety engineer for:
a) Scientific payloads to the International Space Station (ISS), including:
i) International Standard Payload Racks (ISPRs), namely the Fluids & Combustion Facility (FCF).
ii) Subrack payloads for use in the FCF, Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG), and other ISS facilities.
b) Scientific payloads for the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program
c) Spacecraft system and subsystem projects, including:
i) Universal Stage Adapter (USA) for SLS Block-1B Crew
ii) Payload Fairing (PLF) for SLS Block-1B Cargo
iii) Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) Smoke Detector for the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO)
iv) Rack development for the George Washington Carver (GWC) Science Park
5) Provide mentorship to junior safety engineers






Requirements
• US CITIZENSHIP OR VALID GREEN CARD REQUIRED
• Minimum 5 years of safety engineering experience in Aerospace or similarly regulated environment
• Experience providing detailed technical briefings to team members, customers and management
• Experience in requirements development, verification or assurance
• Some travel (5%) possible, some overtime may be needed
